American Gold Eagles
After careful consideration, the United
States mint decided to borrow the design of the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold
coin for the obverse of its newAmerican Gold Eagle coin. The $20
Saint-Gaudens was first minted in1907 and remained in general
circulation until 1933. The design on the reverse of the Gold Eagle
captures a bald eagle swooping into a nest holding its family,
symbolizing many classic American concepts.
The Miley Busiek
design is surrounded by other information, including the amount of
gold, its purity, and the stated face value of the US Eagle. The
American Gold Eagle coin maintains a unique advantage over most
other gold coins — the United States government guarantees its gold
content, weight, and purity. Introduced in 1986, American Gold Eagle
coins are made only from gold mined in the United States
