After careful consideration, the United States mint decided to borrow the design of the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin for the obverse of its newAmerican Gold Eagle coin. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was first minted in1907 and remained in general circulation until 1933. The design on the reverse of the Gold Eagle captures a bald eagle swooping into a nest holding its family, symbolizing many classic American concepts.
